Dew Point Monitoring – Dew Point Sensors and Transmitters
Dew point is more than a humidity value. In critical industrial processes, it is an early warning parameter for moisture related risks such as condensation, corrosion, icing, product degradation, unstable drying and unplanned downtime. Unlike relative humidity, dew point directly indicates the absolute moisture content of gases. It is therefore the reliable control parameter wherever dry air, dry gas or ultra low moisture conditions are required.
In applications such as battery production, compressed air drying, plastic granulate drying, additive manufacturing and process gas monitoring, even minor moisture deviations can affect quality, safety, energy consumption and compliance. Dew point measurement should therefore be considered a core element of process control and risk management, not a commodity measurement.
Key Benefits of E+E Dew Point Measurement:
Long-term stable measurement for reliable process decisions throughout the entire lifecycle.
Continuous process visibility with the TDS501 measuring down to −70 °C Td without signal freezing.
Fast response for earlier detection of moisture deviations and more efficient process control.
Robust sensor design for demanding industrial conditions, high pressure, temporary condensation and contamination risks.
Traceable calibration competence with accredited dew point calibration and status as a Designated Institute for humidity and dew point.
Application specific portfolio with TDS501, EE371, EE355 and EE354 from refrigeration dryer monitoring and compressed air systems to high-end low-dew-point control.
In critical drying, gas and compressed air processes, the real risk is often not a single inaccurate value, but unnoticed sensor drift over time. A dew point sensor may perform well directly after installation or calibration. If the measured value gradually shifts, operators may believe the process is safely dry while moisture is already outside the acceptable range. This can lead to hidden quality risks, unnecessary drying costs and delayed maintenance decisions.
E+E Elektronik addresses this risk with dew point measurement concepts designed for stable and reliable process data over the full-service life.
The TDS501 for example uses a measuring method with four robust capacitive sensing elements and advanced auto-calibration. Together with proven auto-calibration concepts in the wider E+E dew point portfolio, this helps reduce drift related uncertainty and supports stable moisture monitoring, even in demanding low dew point applications. Customers can base process control, maintenance decisions and quality documentation on measured values they can trust, not only during commissioning, but over many years of operation.
In dynamic processes, moisture conditions can change within minutes. Doors open, airlocks cycle, batches change, dryers drift and process loads vary. During these moments, the control system needs live dew point data. If a sensor freezes the output signal during auto-calibration, the displayed value may look stable, but it no longer reflects the real process condition.
The TDS501 from E+E Elektronik was developed for continuous dew point measurement down to −70 °C Td without signal freezing. Its four-element measuring- method enables auto-calibration while maintaining process visibility. This supports reliable monitoring around the clock and efficient dehumidification control. It is especially valuable in applications such as battery dry rooms, plastic granulate drying, adsorption dryers and other processes where hidden moisture deviations can lead to quality losses, energy waste or process instability.
In dynamic drying, gas and compressed air processes, dew point changes are process signals that require timely action. If a sensor reacts too slowly, the control system may detect moisture deviations too late, compensate with unnecessary safety margins or miss the right moment to adjust dehumidification, regeneration or purge cycles. This can lead to excessive drying, higher energy consumption, delayed fault detection, unstable process conditions or increased quality risk.
E+E dew point sensors are designed to provide fast and reliable process feedback. They do more than deliver stable values under ideal conditions.
Several E+E features support this fast process response. The measuring method of the TDS501 with four sensing elements enables continuous measurement during auto-calibration. Configurable stainless steel filter options allow the right balance between sensor protection and response speed. The optional open filter cap enables maximum dynamics in clean and dry environments where the fastest possible response is required. Combined with compact inline integration and digital interfaces such as Modbus RTU, E+E sensors help turn dew point from a passive monitoring value into a real control signal. With faster dew point feedback, customers can detect moisture deviations earlier, reduce energy intensive control errors, avoid unnecessary excessive drying and keep critical processes closer to the required moisture window.
Dew point sensors are often installed directly in challenging process environments such as compressed air lines, drying systems, gas supply systems, pipelines, OEM machines and high pressure applications. In these environments, pressure, oil, dust, temporary condensation, temperature changes and contamination can affect sensor reliability and measurement confidence. This makes robustness a decisive factor for uptime and total cost of ownership.
The TDS501 combines robust sensing elements, stainless steel housing, a sintered stainless steel filter, configurable filter options, IP65 protection and pressure resistance up to 80 bar. Its wettable sensing elements help the sensor tolerate temporary condensation events, supporting reliable operation even when process conditions are not ideal.
For high pressure industrial process control and compressed air applications, the EE371 offers a pressure rating up to 100 bar, a robust metal enclosure, various process connections and a 360° swirling front end for easy integration. The EE355 adds a compact stainless steel solution for compressed air systems, plastic dryers and industrial drying processes down to −60 °C Td. The EE354 is optimised for refrigeration dryer and compressed air network monitoring down to −20 °C Td with a rugged stainless steel design and pressure tight installation up to 80 bar.
In quality critical and regulated processes, dew point values must do more than control a process. They must support product release, dryer validation, customer specifications, audit documentation, complaint handling and root cause analysis. For these tasks, customers need measurement data that is not only stable, but also traceable and defensible.
E+E Elektronik combines industrial dew point sensors with strong metrological competence. The E+E accredited calibration laboratory offers traceable calibration for dew point sensors and dew point mirrors from -90°C to +95 °C dew point. E+E Elektronik is also the Designated Institute of the Republic of Austria for humidity and dew point, among other measurands. Customers therefore receive more than a sensor. They receive a complete measurement solution based on calibration expertise, traceability and long-term confidence in the measured value.
